Brasil 1, Peru 0
The soccer game was great! We got to the stadium almost 2 hours early so we could make sure we got good seats. And that we did, but the sun was so hot. The game started at 4 pm. The sun was very bright and there was little wind.
The atmosphere before the game was incredible! We were doing the wave, chanting cheers, singing songs about being a proud Brasilian, and eating and drinking. It was a lot of fun, even though it was about 85 degrees. I thought to myself—this is going to be a wild game, with all this activity. But then, as soon as the game started everybody sat down. If you stood up or got up after that, believe me, people told you to sit down. If you didn’t, people would throw things at you. I thought it quite comical that these people who seemingly don’t like any rules or laws (more on this in another blog), or quiet for that matter—suddenly become so orderly.
I learned the basics of the game pretty quickly and became verbose. However, I was quiet compared to the Brasilians when the ball got close to the goal. If the coach or referee did something the people didn’t like, they started chanting things that I cannot/will not repeat here. At times, it was a bit scary (knowing about stampedes and people being crushed at these games). I was actually relieved when Brasil made a goal. That was until the guy behind us either dropped his beer or crushed it. Anyway, his beer went all over us. I abhor the smell of beer.
Anyway, I thought soccer was a pretty good game, although I kept hoping to see a fight or something. (Maybe I should look into hockey). I do have some suggestions to make the game better. I think the field should be smaller. Where is the fun in watching those guys run up and down that huge field? Heck, cut the playing field about 3/4 and have some more action! And what is this about tied games? That’s no good! There should be winners of each game.
Oh yeah, the player who made the goal for Brasil was taken out of the game right afterward. I didn’t understand. I found out later that he was already scheduled to be removed, but then was allowed to stay longer since he made the goal. Beleza.
