Six Flags Over Jesus
I went to a Buckhead hair salon yesterday and the shampoo guy was making the usual small talk—where are you from, where do you work, etc. Having worked in the Ministry for so long, many times I’ve already gauged the person and conversation and kind of know whether to give an ‘in your face” answer or a gentle answer when they get to the where do you work question. I told him I work at In Touch. He asked, “what’s that?” Since I suspected this guy was going to freak anyway, I decided to give him the full throttle answer—It’s a global ministry.
“Oh, that’s that huge place on the side of the interstate! It’s like its own city!” he exclaimed. (We determined that it was indeed In Touch he was talking about.)
Then he said, “My friends call that place Six Flags Over Jesus.” And he was a bit hysterical.
As I laughed and told him my co-workers will be interested to hear that nickname, I said, “Well, we do have the flags out front.”
He then got in front of me and knelt down a bit to get a good look at me. I guess he wanted to see what one of “us” looks like—you know, one of those Jesus Freaks who works at Six Flags Over Jesus and who does “no telling what” behind those compound walls [sarcasm]. And just maybe he was looking for my reaction to him, being he was a guy working at a hair salon (if you know what I mean). Don’t worry--I was a good ambassador—for Christ and In Touch.
I always knew In Touch was an entertaining place to work, but didn’t realize some in the outside world refer to it as Six Flags Over Jesus.
Although this nickname and experience were a bit comical, it also reminded me that people are always watching, anticipating our response, always wondering if we’re for real, and wondering if God is for real and if He loves them. What a huge responsibility we have as ambassadors for Christ!
By the way, the guy’s name was David, in case you want to pray for his salvation.
